Dragged into sunlight2/18/2024 If you want posing for cameras and disingenuous speeches, it is your ticket money being wasted, not ours. You don’t go to a show to see an old man talking about metal, giving the same tired and disingenuous speech delivered night after night. We certainly grew a little tired of seeing the same audience interaction from bands. Dragged Into Sunlight is an ugliness best kept in the dark. That said, what is your main goal to deliver to the audience when you play live, and in the manner that you do?ĭIS: Correct. For the most part, they did not face the crowd, and I never saw the band do that before, which was pretty mind-blowing. I skimmed through live videos, and you have your back to the crowd or the set is just extremely dark, no face coverings-? I remember ages ago when ISIS released their first full-length, Celestial, and I saw them in roughly 2000. SLUG: If I’m correct, you only cover your faces for band photos. It is important that we prioritize the music itself, as that is what that is what Dragged Into Sunlight is about. Dragged Into Sunlight is an experience best served without distraction. Contemporary extreme music has enough distractions and labelling. There’s also something to be said for presenting listeners with a blank canvas. We enjoy a separation between our music and varying professions, allowing us to explore what is essentially an exorcism of our daily frustrations. There is definitely some beauty to be found in the unknown. Both are different heads to the same beast.” “We don’t think about each record sequentially. SLUG: Also what made you decide to keep your identities hidden?ĭIS: Well, in a world where everything is a known entity, mainly because of the Internet, some things are best kept hidden. The music that Dragged Into Sunlight has strived to create was a necessity-something with a blatant disregard for the boundaries presented by scenes and politics, something which doesn’t care, has no empathy and acts on its own selfish agenda. SLUG: How did this collective of five artists come to create Dragged into Sunlight, and what made you decide on the music you wanted to create?ĭIS: There are upwards of 10 individuals involved in Dragged Into Sunlight nowadays. While the band just released a collaboration with extreme noise artists Gnaw Their Lounges, titled NV, it’s all about DIS’s artistry, which emphasizes intense live shows. Dragged Into Sunlight-who play their shows with their backs to the crowds pummeling some ugly, grimy and noisy death/black/doom extreme music-have become widely known with just two full-length albums. In the mean time, listen to records from both acts below and just imagine the damage we’re in for.Fans of Dragged Into Sunlight won’t see much sunlight when the U.K.-based, five-piece band plays at the Metro Bar in Salt Lake City on July 10, well after the sun has gone down over the valley. Keep your eyes and ears open for more news from this collab in the coming weeks. That sort of musical direction coming from the bleak pairing of Dragged into Sunlight and Gnaw their Tongues is bound to be devastating, if not (appropriately) miserable. This sounds like it could be very similar to the Full of Hell / Merzbow split record, which was one of my personal favorites of 2014. The band describes the collaboration as follows: Expect a vortex of audio madness inspired by the likes of Godflesh, Merzbow, Napalm Death, Terrorizer, Mugwart and Esoteric, and of course our good friends Gnaw Their Tongues. At long last, it looks like we’ll be getting new recordings from Dragged into Sunlight in 2015, and it’ll be a collaborative record with Dutch drone/black metal act Gnaw Their Tongues. Since then, the band have been an active live act, but have been relatively quiet on the new-material front. Later that year after their MDF performance, the band released their sophomore record Widowmaker, which widened the band’s scope into dark cinematic territories. They remain as one of the most intense live acts I’ve ever seen, and their music naturally reflects this nature. We’ve been following the black metal act for years, and I’ve had the privilege of seeing the act perform at Maryland Deathfest 2012, where they performed most of their set facing away from the audience to candlelight and strobes before turning around for a vicious finale. For those unfamiliar, UK’s Dragged into Sunlight embody the deepest misanthropic spite and chaos anyone could hope for out of the metal underground.
